Divorce Costs - Attorneys
Divorce Lawyers - Costs, Retainers, Flat
Fees in Atlanta & Georgia
One of the most common questions we are faced with
as divorce attorneys in Atlanta is what will be the cost of a
divorce. The true answer to that question is no one knows for
certain. Because most attorneys bill by the hour for a divorce, the
cost of a divorce is determined by the number of hours that an
attorney must spend on your particular divorce case.
Guessing the amount of time that must be spent on any particular
divorce is very difficult - especially at the beginning of a
divorce. Certainly the number of issues involved in a case are a
factor, however, just as much of a factor is how willing all parties
involved are to amicable work out whatever differences of opinion
they have regarding the issues involved in a divorce. If the parties
have already agreed, in principal, to all major issues, the costs of
a divorce generally are relatively low because the attorneys
involved do not have to spend as much time on various aspects of
your case from discovery to a final trial. On the other hand, in
cases involving difficult to prove issues (such as locating hidden
assets, proving substance and alcohol abuse or family violence, or
who is the parent that is best fit to raise any children that were
born during the marriage), the costs involved can quickly become
substantial.
Given the many ways that a divorce case can go, Meriwether & Tharp
does not offer flat fee for divorce cases. Instead, we charge a
retainer at the beginning of litigation which works as a deposit
towards work to be performed on a case. The amount of the retainer
depends upon our initial assessment of the work that needs to be
done on your case - especially work that in a short amount of time.
At Meriwether & Tharp, our retainers for divorces range from $750
for the simplest divorce with no children to $5,000. In order to
give you a quote for a retainer in your specific case, you will need
